‘CONSIDER YOUR SKILLS WHEN CHOOSING A CAREER!’
With the Undergraduate Placement Exam (LYS) being over, the students are anxiously waiting to hear the results and shape their future. The experts state that choosing the right career is one of the most significant decisions in a person’s life, and they recommend students to identify their skills realistically.
Merve Yavuz, IUE Psychological Development and Counseling Centre Coordinator, stated that being informed about occupations would be very helpful for students. “In order to choose a right career, one needs to be aware of skills and knowledge, and the extent they need to be able to perform that certain profession. They need to identify their expectations of that profession. They need to analyze current professions, and research about other options,” said Yavuz.
‘Answer the questions, choose your career’
Yavuz, who asked students to make sure the requirements of a certain profession suited them or not, pointed out the importance of skills, interests, and values in choosing a career. Knowing about professions would make deciding about careers easier, said Yavuz and stated the following:
“Students need to take criteria such as job description, length of education, and major courses taken, required qualifications, life after graduation, work conditions, and salary into consideration. They need to be able to answer the questions whether the field they are interested in match their interest and skills, the pros and cons of that job, whether the job is in high demand or not, the average salary, how long people worked in that job for, whether the demand for that job will increase or decrease, etc.”
