SMART IRRIGATION TECHNOLOGY
Traditional irrigation methods became more technological thanks to entrepreneurial students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE). IUE students developed a self-sufficient, remote control irrigation system called “Green Insight” which works with renewable energy that can be controlled on a mobile application.
Students Egidius Pineas, Orhan Çağatay, Turhan Can Bakalım, and Atakan Güney, from IUE Departments of Electrical-Electronics Engineering and Computer Engineering, aimed to increase efficiency in arable lands. The students established an efficient, eco- irrigation system.
Atakan Güney, student from IUE Department of Computer Engineering, gave information about their project. Güney said, “We plan to lower the workload and production cost of the producers. Our system, Green Insight, is made up of 3 parts. The mobile application, where the user accesses the system and intervenes, a server connected to the database where information about irrigation and other information is stored and micro control unit that operates the irrigation. The user, given that there is internet connection, is able to start/end the irrigation whenever, whenever. Also, control instantly whether irrigation is happening or not. User can have access to information on previous irrigation and pre schedule irrigation”.
‘Both efficient and eco-friendly’
Güney reported that the hardware of the system included solar panel, wind vane, water pump, water tank, and control unit, whereas the software included the server, database, mobile application, and programming of control unit. “We developed a remote control irrigation system. We are able to record the irrigation data, and provide time control and manual control. By this way, we developed an efficient and eco-friendly system, said” Güney.
