IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS WILL LEAD THE WAY IN PUBLIC HEALTH
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) is set out to meet the health needs of the society. Eko-Health Meetings are organized by IUE Faculty of Health Sciences to discuss and inform the public on current health issues. The guests, each an expert in their respective fields, share information on different topics as cold, flu, obesity, elderly care, patient care at home, etc. at the informative meetings conducted at public places.
Prof. Dr. Çağ Çal, Acting Dean of IUE Faculty of Health Sciences, pointed out that since its establishment; IUE was set out to bring knowledge to the people of Izmir. “Since the University decided to provide education in the field of medicine, we immediately started to create projects about this issue and conducted necessary studies to convey information to the public. We will organize consecutive meetings in Balçova and Narlıdere once a month, where we will inform the public about current issues on health such as patient care at home, elderly care, obesity, and discuss solution offers,” stated Prof. Dr. Çağ Çal.
Prof. Dr. Çal said that they held the first of the Eko-Health Meetings at Narlıdere Atatürk Cultural Centre with the collaboration of Narlıdere Municipality where Prof. Dr. Çağrı Büke gave information about flu to the citizens.
Watch out for Seasonal Flu
Prof. Dr. Çağrı Büke, Lecturer at Ege University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, the first guest of Eko-Health Meetings, indicated that flu viruses changed each year and stated, “If the person experiences a sore throat, dry cough, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, stomach ache, and diarrhoea, then it is considered flu. The patient should start to feel better in a week. Only dry coughs may last for weeks. If the fever exists more than one week, you should get it checked; it may be a warning for pneumonia.”
Patient’s complaints and simple blood work helps diagnose the disease pointed Prof. Dr. Büke, and said that the antibiotics were useless when it came to healing flu. Prof. Dr. Büke said, “Antiviral medicines work best for flu. People should not take fever reducers unless they have to.”
