STUDENTS ENVISIONED BAYRAKLI AS A CITY OF HEALTH
Students of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, and Department of Architecture, redesigned the health spaces in Bayraklı. Total of 50 students, explored the establishments in the county for days and conjured up facilities that could be efficiently used by the patients, and turned those into projects. Students of interior architecture and architecture came together for projects that are also supported by Dutch Health Architects group.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz Hasırcı, Head of IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, stated that students analysed the health spaces in Bayraklı intensively. She said that students got involved in studies coordinated by Dutch architects Maurits Algra, Victor de Leeuw and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahenk Yılmaz, Asst. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Tuna Ultav, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kıvanç Kılınç, Lecturer Dr. Bahar Durmaz, and guided by research assistants Hande Atmaca, Seren Borvalı, İrem Cabbaroğlu, Oylum Dikmen, Işıl Kazaz, and Elif Tekcan.
Designers emphatized with patients
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasırcı stated that health spaces are the most used up spaces where people feel down the most. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasırcı stated the following:
“Health spaces are also dysfunctional in terms of spirit and convenience. Bayraklı is a place where different income level groups live side by side that is often mentioned for urban transformation. The students used mapping of the region from a ‘user point of view’ in light of the scenarios given to them. They acted as an emergency response vehicle trying to make its way through the narrow streets, an old resident looking for a pharmacy on duty, a mother with her baby who needs to visit the hospital regularly, or a patient with a wheel chair in need of going to the nearest family practitioner. The data obtained by students formed a database for solutions for Bayraklı. In this way, they experienced the fact that designing health spaces would not be approached independently from the existing urban, social, cultural, and economic structure they take part in.”
Hasırcı pointed out that architects organized a structure externally while interior architects designed interior spaces, and that students designed health spaces that are easily accessible, which meets the needs of the region and involves a sustainable living environment.
