YOUNG AND OLD PEOPLE ARE HAPPY
It has been reported that the rate of individuals who claimed that they were happy was 59% according to Life Satisfaction Survey 2013 by Turkish Statistical Institute. The study revealed that 65% of individuals between the ages of 18 - 24 claimed that they were happy, whereas, 55% of individuals between the ages of 45-54 claimed they were happy. The rate of happiness reached to 63% again, when it came to ages 65 and over.
Prof. Dr. Erol Kahveci, Head of IUE Department of Sociology, who evaluated the research results, stated that the study provided significant data in terms of sociological, psychological, demographic, and economic aspects. He said that the data was obtained through sampling method, and the relation between happiness and age in Turkey was defined with “U” curve. Prof. Dr. Kahveci stated the following:
“The data also supports the case of midlife crisis that is generally accepted. Elderliness is usually associated with decrease in life quality and increase in health problems. The studies reveal that older people can control their emotions more efficiently, and come up with better solutions during conflict. They have low tendency to get frustrated.”
Positive effect of marriage on happiness
“The rate of individuals who claimed that they were happy is 59% in Turkey. Among these individuals, it has been observed that women are happier compared to men. However, in addition to this distinction that is based on gender, it has been observed that married individuals were much happier compared to single individuals,” said Prof. Dr. Kahveci.
Prof. Dr. Kahveci stated that the rates of marriage age and divorce gradually increased, however studies conducted in different countries since 1938 produced similar results. The studies showed that physical and mental health of married individuals was much better compared to those of single individuals. Prof. Dr. Kahveci said, “Rates of substance dependence, depression, and suicide in married individuals is extremely low compared to single individuals. Married individuals have longer life spans. Studies also reveal that marriage instils self-confidence, and provides a chance to eliminate stress. Individuals feel less lonely.”
