‘We are dependent on natural gas’
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu, gave information about the workshop and pointed out that countries’ foreign energy dependency has increased. He said, “Natural gas, with a rapid increase of consumption especially in Northern Hemisphere, comes out as an energy source that is geo economically important in the recent years. European Union Countries and countries with a rapidly developing economies like Turkey, became highly dependent on foreign resources. Turkey ended up paying $56 billion for energy import last year. Foreign trade deficit for energy for Turkey is known to be around 60 percent.”
‘Security of supply is a significant issue’
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Biresselioğlu pointed out that Turkey was dependent on foreign resources at 98% in terms of natural gas. Biresselioğlu stated the following:
“Russia has the biggest share with 58 percent among the suppliers. Despite the rapid economic growth, the ratio of natural gas in our country, which is not rich in terms of energy resources, has a 45%in electricity production and 35% in total energy consumption. Therefore, concerns regarding natural gas, global energy agenda, and security of supply in the agenda of policy makers turn out to be a significant problem for us.”
