‘Folklore is as ancient as the history of humanity’
Prof. Dr. Türkmen stated that folklore was a very young discipline, and he stated the following:
“There are two sides to folklore. The first one deals with folkloric materials, and the other one analysis. When we approach folklore in terms of materials, we can see that it is as ancient as the history of humanity. However, folkloric knowledge that made it to present day through verbal or written sources can only be used as subsidiary materials because they are sometimes provided accidentally or with a different purpose. Even though we have rich materials, we do not have a folkloric study like the ones in Western countries yet. I want young academicians to be enthusiastic. They can only succeed this way. They need to keep up with the world. You cannot become a scientist without knowing the world. Have the courage to speak out your mind. Do not be afraid of criticisms. Otherwise, you cannot excel.”
