IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS-MORE THAN A UNIVERSITY!
Ekrem Demirtaş, President of the Board of Trustees of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), stated that they were expecting youth with dreams and they worked to make their goals and dreams come true. President Demirtaş said, “We are offering more than a university to those who want to excel, those with dreams”.
An informative meeting regarding new attempts and initiatives for 2014 – 2015 Academic Year was held at Izmir University of Economics with the participation of President Demirtaş, IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, deans, and department heads. President Demirtaş pointed out that they established IUE in order to train the students demanded by Izmir business life, and that today’s youth chased their dreams.
The world span at a different pace, said President Demirtaş. “We need to give up the old, traditional education system. Nobody wants to listen to courses as they are listening to preach. We cannot prepare the youth for future this way. The trend is towards smart class, flexible education system. The concept of classroom is even changing. You can now take a class on the grass, or even on a ferry as you are traveling somewhere, said Demirtaş.
‘University of the self-confident individuals’
President Demirtaş stated that they aimed to equip the students in a way that they can work all around the world, and that they gave more than a diploma to students at IUE. Demirtaş stated the following:
“We provide self-confidence. We want them to be innovative and provide them the opportunity to develop their projects. We provide the resources. We will also provide space at Bilimpark. In this way, Turkey will be able to make it among the top 10 powers in the world. We have 6 thousand 281 students. We can raise this number but we don’t have the facilities. We are constructing the building for School of Foreign Languages on Balçova Campus. It will be completed in February.”
‘Integrated education with 4+1’
Demirtaş mentioned that they had students from 55 countries, and they wanted students of every nationality to study at Izmir Economics. He said that they switched to integrated education this year. He said that integrated education allowed senior students to study one more year and get in the graduate program without thesis with 4+1 system. He reminded that TUSIAD’s Entrepreneurship Flag was flown on the pole on campus for IUE’s success at “Bu Gençlikte İş Var” competition with 358 enterprising projects. Demirtaş said, “We are in 5th place among the innovative universities. Our students are getting involved in many accomplishments so we need to provide them with all kinds of opportunities.”
‘New education models on the way’
Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen pointed out that they were leading the way in Turkish higher education system and they wanted to maintain this in the coming years as well. Prof. Dr. Esen stated that they were going to use reversed education systems and new education models. The Rector said the following:
“It is predicted that today’s students’ work lives will last about 45-50 years. Undergraduate programs will not be sufficient and graduate programs will become more significant. We are getting stronger in the fields of engineering and medicine. We are moving steadily by studying the developments. We are acting in accordance with our Strategic Plan of next 10 years. We are collaborating with international consultants to help our students reveal their entrepreneurship skills, and we accompany them to not only to have a say so in national but also in the international arenas. We planned for our next 10 years by taking the global trends into consideration. We are working our way up on the values of innovation, participation, social responsibility, and excellence.”
