‘I WILL KEEP ON SPONSORING STUDENTS’
Fashion Designer Barbaros Şansal, who identifies himself as ‘Tailor’s Apprentice’, stated that students who are needy and staying at dormitories are in need of underwear the most, clothing is provided somehow but different needs of students should not be overlooked.
Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design hosted Barbaros Şansal. Şansal, who talked about Turkey, fashion design, and colours, indicated that he sponsored one thousand 600 students. He said that students with poor finances needed clean and unused underwear more than clothing. Şansal stated the following:
“I helped sponsor one thousand 600 students as part of Campaign for Supporting National Education. One day I received a letter from one of my students. The letter stated that they somehow received clothing items but they had difficulty obtaining clean and never used underwear the most. I visited a store in this line of production and purchased kilos of underwear as much as I could. We separated them based on size and delivered two sets to each student. It is extremely important for people to have their own clean underwear. Those students are holding very different positions at different locations today. I will continue to support and sponsor my students. I got involved in many various programs because of that reason.”
‘Turkey does not dress up’
Fashion in Turkey started with the hat reform however, with the closing of hat workshops, The Turkish fashion could not progress, stated Şansal. “We had national brands. There were hat workshops in girls’ vocational high schools and technical schools in a country with a hat reform. First of all, these workshops were closed. The Famous fashion designers started profession by designing hats. The deal is to increase the head ratio to one eight, which is one already one seventh. However, Turkey follows the fashion from TV screens. There is a notion like dressing up like actors, singers is fashionable. In reality, you do not wear a dress, you get in it.”
