ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN BUILDINGS
"Air Conditioning in Architectural Design – Breathing Structures Seminar”, co-organized by Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Manufacturers’ Association (ISKID), the Association of the Aegean Industrialists and Businessmen of Refrigeration (ESSIAD), and IUE Department of Architecture took place at Izmir University of Economics.
Prof. Dr. Ender Yazgan Bulgun, Dean of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, who presented the opening speech at the Conference Hall, stated that energy efficiency in buildings was possible via aesthetic solutions. She said, "All respective design and engineering disciplines should work together for cost efficient, high energy and environmental awareness integrated designs.”
Akın Kayacan, Chairman of the Executive Board of ESSIAD, indicated that the sector needed trained workforce. "We want to ensure that people who received vocational training work in the sector through university-industry collaborations. Majority of our members are small and medium sized enterprises. We are working to increase the export potential,” stated Kayacan. Kerim Gümrükçüler, Representative of Central Air Conditioning Commission of ISKID, on the other hand, reported that they aimed to establish sustainable systems through air conditioning studies.
‘Universal Law’
Following the opening speeches, Prof. Dr. Macit Toksoy moderated a panel where Investor Erdoğan Özgörkey, Architect Şükrü Kocagöz, Machine Engineer Hakan Bulgun participated as guests. Şükrü Kocagöz said that besides being an architect, he was also interested in theatre. Kocagöz stated the following:
"There is audience, actors, and scriptwriter in theatre. Theatre will not be possible in the absence of this triangle. The same triangle for buildings includes building contractor, employer, and design. Better buildings are possible when this triangle works efficiently. Building contractors are the missing elements of this triangle. In general, even though laws to define many professions in Turkey are present, there are no laws defining building contractors. Anyone can become a building contractor. Laws regarding building contractors need to be implemented in order to solve this issue. Areas of responsibility for architects in our country are not clear cut. There needs to be universal laws.”
As Hakan Bulgun pointed out people spent too much money on cooling and heating, Erdoğan Özgörkey indicated that disorder and lack of plan was an issue in the country.
