IZMIR WILL REJOIN WITH ‘KORDON’
Izmir Bay is waiting to re-join with Kordon Passenger Boat. The boat, which carried Izmir people across the sea for many years, is going to get a new face with the new project by the lecturers and students within Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Design Research and Application Centre (EKOTAM). With this project, interior design of the boat, which was not in use for a long time, will be renewed completely. Kordon Passenger Boat will become the place for holding wedding parties, dinner parties and reuniting the citizens with the sea.
The project, which was developed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Can Özcan, Director of IUE EKOTAM, IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Lecturers Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Ergül and Asst. Prof. Dr. Markus Wilsing, and students Özge Çakıroğlu and Shahrzad Vaseti, and presented to Izmir Metropolitan Municipality IZDENIZ A.Ş, will allow Kordon Passenger Boat to serve Izmir public with its new look and identity.
‘Weddings Should Take Place on the Bay’
Asst. Prof. Dr. Can Özcan gave information about the project and he said they had great fun while designing the project. “We see this project as a nice gift to Izmir from Izmir University of Economics. We undertook a project about Kordon Passenger Boat which was identified with Izmir. Is Izmir countryside that we are organizing countryside weddings? Izmir weddings should take place on the bay. Dining out should be on the bay with a spectacular view. Izmir loves sea but it has a rather distant relation with it. We aim to make this relation better with Kordon Passenger Boat. It is wreckage right now, but we are used to it. We created a brand new institution for the University out of an abandoned building”, said Özcan.
‘Enjoy the Bay on Kordon Passenger Boat’
Lecturer Asst. Prof. Dr. Markus Wilsing stated that the passenger boat was used as a means to travel from home to work and vice versa, however, they aimed to reverse this with their design. While senior student Özge Çakıroğlu indicated that the project would create a difference for Izmir, Iranian IUE student Shahrzad Vaseti siad that they were extremely excited to be redesigning an old boat.
