FUTURE PERSPECTIVES AT 2ND ISTANBUL DESIGN BIENNIAL
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture attends the 2nd Istanbul Design Biennial Academic Program with their 9 graduation projects under the theme ‘Future Perspectives’. The exhibition, which was prepared with the contributions of Asst. Prof. Dr. S. Bahar Durmaz, Lecturer Gudjon Thor Erlendsson, Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanos Stasinopoulos, and Research Asst. Ece Küreli, senior graduation project coordinators, will be open for visitors at Antrepo No.7 Karaköy address until December 14 within the scope of “The Future Is Not What It Used To Be” themed biennial that was organized by Istanbul Culture and Art Foundation.
The project coordinators reported that the projects aimed to bring different perspectives on currents issues encountered in architectural design and scenarios regarding future, and they stated the following remarks:
“The exhibition shows the approaches of 3 different units operating within the graduation studio, with 3 projects from each unit. Unit 1 focuses on a site, which was proposed as a museum space by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in Kadifekale region, and proposes to build a design museum on the historical site. It makes a future proposal in accordance with the vision of Izmir becoming the “design capital” of Mediterranean in the designated urban space. Unit 2 “Design [for] the future” is based on future scenarios and aims to design a building in İnciraltı area of Izmir in the year 2054 and Unit 3 exercises a design methodology based on contemporary computational technologies. The overall exhibition argues that future may not be as “futuristic” as we thought; daily concepts will be part of future more.”
