DESIGN IN THE KITCHEN
Range hood, oven, and stove top, the essentials of a kitchen, are being redesigned. Students of IUE Department of Industrial Design, made the kitchen equipment more safe and handy, as part of the design studio course they took. Approximately 35 students working on built-in products determined the current trends.
Onur Mengi, Lecturer at IUE Department of Industrial Design, mentioned that their students worked on built-in products this year. He said, “Our students took the issues faced in the kitchen into consideration and tried to find solutions through design. They learned the technical details from TEKA engineers. We are producing design utilized by industry-university collaboration. The main purpose had been to develop physical and digital interfaces. They found solutions for light settings, rail systems of the doors, for height settings through design.”
‘Slide and Hide Oven Door’
IUE Department of Industrial Design Junior Student İdil Çubukgil told that she worked on ovens. “Ovens sometimes may cause injuries. I approached a new design in terms of safety and ergonomy. When the oven is opened, the door slides in with the help of a gear system, which then also allows an oven tray to come out, thus, prevents injuries, and burns. But this requires intertwining of design and engineering. This process taught about working together as well,” said Çubukgil.
‘Range Hood Giving Out Clean Air’
Berk Babayiğit, also a junior in Department of Industrial Design, stated that he chose to work on range hoods, and many times these products were not being used thinking that they were useless. Babayiğit told that he used lights that changed colours. “In my design, the polluted air is sucked from the middle and clean air comes out from the side panels. So with kinesis, no food smell stays. And the filter changes colour when it is time to change it,” he said.
