IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS COOPERATING WITH GAZI HOSPITAL IN HEALTH
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Health Sciences, and Vocational School of Health Services will get hands-on training at Gazi Hospital. A protocol on educational cooperation between Izmir University of Economics and Izmir Gazi Hospital was signed. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, IUE Rector, Surgeon Salih Mertan, Chairman of Board of Directors of Gazi Hospital, Selim Amato, Vice Chairman of Board of Directors of Gazi Hospital, lecturers, physicians, and students attended the protocol ceremony.
President Ekrem Demirtaş stated that they started off as being the first university of economics, then they raised engineers, and lately as the city started to focus on health and health tourism, they planned to produce graduates who could serve in that field. Demirtaş said, “We got in the business of training qualified workforce who can manage the enterprises in order to contribute to the economy. Factory managers are usually engineers, so we decided to train engineers. We based our studies on information and technology. Izmir adopted health tourism as a vision, so we are planning to train wide range of skilled health professionals who can serve foreign patients by providing them instruction in English.”
‘Quality Education Combined with Good Practice’
President Demirtaş pointed that they established Faculty of Health Sciences, and Vocational School of Health Services, and they signed this cooperation protocol for their students, who will be facing patients and serving them, to get hands-on training. He said that they decided to work with Gazi Hospital for that reason. “We’ve decided that the Gazi Hospital was the correct address for the high quality vision of Izmir University of Economics. Our students will receive good education and good hands-on training. Gazi Hospital will expand and we will start enrolling students for our faculty of medicine. This is a project for the next 3 years. Our protocol will last for many years given that Gazi Hospital meets the structural needs within these 3 years,” stated Demirtaş.
‘Leading Name in Health As Well’
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen emphasized that both institutions would benefit from this cooperation, and they were almost done with faculty of medicine and they were planning on enrolling students for next academic year. Prof. Dr. Esen stated that they adopted an innovative and a leading education model in health as they did in any other field.
‘Being a University Hospital is Our Dream Come True’
Chairman Dr. Salih Mertan stated that they wanted to offer education at a university level when they established the hospital and their dream came true now. Vice Chaiman Selim Amato said that Izmir University of Economics was a standard for the city and they would offer the best education to students. Amato also stated that the hospital recently purchased a new lot, and they planned to grow in accordance with YOK regulations.
