‘BIRIKIM/GATHERING’ by CANDIDATE ARCHITECTS
Candidate architects bring current solutions to urban transformation and historical regions of Izmir. Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture celebrated their 10th year with the design work by students regarding various regions of the city. Students displayed their projects about Bayraklı, Kadifekale, Basmane, Agora, and Kemeraltı at the “Birikim/Gathering” titled exhibition.
Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees attended the exhibition at IUE Multi-Purpose Hall and got information from the students about their work. Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar Durmaz, Head of IUE Department of Architecture, stated that they aimed to revive the design potential of Izmir, and she said, “We follow both local and global architecture trends closely. Department of Architecture is celebrating its 10th year. Our students developed different designs regarding urban transformation regions such as Bayraklı, Kadifekale, Basmane, Agora, and the Historical Kemeraltı Bazaar. They focused on the city and the society by taking the status of the regions into consideration. They developed wide range of designs from social facilities to health facilities.”
’Outcome of a 10 Year Study’
Asst. Prof. Dr. Durmaz also mentioned that they drew attention to urban and architectural issues of Izmir, and the exhibition was an outcome of a 10 year study by the graduates and the students.
