TASTY AND CREATIVE COOKIES
There was a tight race among unique design and custom cookies baked by high school students at the “Gastronomy Contest” organized by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) - Department of Culinary Arts and Management.
Tayfun Arslan, student at Urla Hakan Çeken Anadolu High School, came in first place with his pistachio cookie recipe at the “Awaken the Cookie Monster in You” titled contest. Oktay Vardar from Bornova Private High School came in second place with sorbet cocostar, and Sinem İnce and Ilgın Pınar from MEV Private Schools came in third place with their carrot cookie. In vocational schools category, Merve Erduman and Ummuhan Sargın from Bornova Anadolu Technical and Vocational High School came in first place with their hint baba (Hindu father) cookie, Furkan Akgeç from Konak Alsancak Nevvar Salık İşgören Technical and Vocational High School came in second place with his watermelon cookie, and Şeydanur Şahin from Göztepe Technical and Vocational High School came in third place with kadayıf crunchy cookie.
‘Turn Your Hobby into Your Profession’
The young chefs, who were awarded gold coins and medals, will receive their awards at the Ceremony for the 14th Establishment Anniversary of IUE that will take place on April 14. IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, who visited the young chefs, stated that they placed significance on innovation and entrepreneurship. Prof. Dr. Esen said, "As Izmir University of Economics, we never gave up on the significance we placed on innovation and entrepreneurship. We see the outcomes of that in the accomplishments of our alumni. I see innovative and entrepreneurial students here today. They proved their creativity with their cookies. It is very important for the new generation to exhibit their creativity like this. We train students like this and get them ready for the future. I believe that the happiest person on earth is the one who performs his hobby as a profession. I hope these students turn their hobbies into their professions.”
‘Tough Decision’
The jury consisted of Prof. Dr. Nazan Turhan, Head of Department of Food Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Betül Öztürk, Acting Head of IUE Department of Culinary Arts and Management, Bahar Dinçer and İffet Kaya, Project Team Members of Izmir Provincial Directorate for National Education, Mine Kayıcan, Director of IUE Student and Corporate Activities, and Trainer Chefs Melike Konday and Selcen Dabağ, had tough times to decide on the winners. Edible horse and watermelon slices cookies in the horse carriage, cookies presented in coconut, and carrot shaped cookies in a basket attracted great attention.
