‘Became the Favorite Energy of Our Time’
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu stated that renewable energy resources became the center of attention due to the increase of environmental awareness as a result of sustainability observed on a global scale, climate change, and global warming concerns. He indicated that renewable energy, even for developing economies like Turkey, became an important political component. “When we take a look at TEIAS (Turkish Electricity Transmission Company) data, we can see that as of February 2015, the share of renewables including and excluding hydro power are respectively 9% and 29% in the distribution of Turkish gross production of electricity based on primary energy resources. Our country has a great potential in terms of renewable energy resources, primarily wind and solar energy, thanks to its geographical location. Currently, based on TEIAS statistics, we have 3 thousand 730 MW installed wind power and 64 MW installed solar energy (unlicensed) as of end of March 2015,” reported Assoc. Prof. Dr. Biresselioğlu.
‘Target for 2023; 30%’
Prof. Dr. Biresselioğlu stated that as a target for 2023, which is the 100th Anniversary of the Establishment of Turkish Republic, renewable energy resources are planned to make up at least 30% of total electrical energy production, and encourage establishment of solar energy power plants with at least 3 thousand MW with the increase of production capacity based on wind power going up to 20 thousand
