STUDENT ARCHITECTS’ TOUCH
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture reflected the future look of Basmane and Kadifekale to their projects. Urban architecture the students designed in their senior projects revealed the socio-cultural and historical values of Basmane and Kadifekale. By taking the residents’ needs into consideration, students developed suggestions for buildings on subjects such as healthy living, children’s museum, public education, soup kitchen, art and handicraft training, textile center, and observatory.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar Durmaz, Head of IUE Department of Architecture, stated that the students came up with solution recommendations regarding urban architecture in their projects. “There are buildings such as Basmane Train Station, Ayavukla Church, Bıçakçı Inn, Altınpark Excavation Site, and Yıldız Movie Theater in Basmane, our project site, which make up the important historical texture in the city. The area is also in close proximity of Kültürpark and Kemeraltı. The site in Kadifekale is bounded by the castle walls, archeological theater site, and the park. Kadifekale, on the contrary to Basmane, is located on a hillside and has one of the most spectacular views of the city. Our students adopted a participative design concept for both sites that are surrounded by housing,” said Durmaz.
‘Architectural Projects that Comprehend Life’
Asst. Prof. Dr. Durmaz, who indicated that students brought up education center, city gallery, history, and culture themed architectural solution recommendations for children and women, said that they grasped the life in Basmane and Kadifekale at the same time and reflected that in their projects.
