‘NO COMPROMISE: QUALITY IS KEY TO EYE HEALTH’
The experts state that effects of sunlight increase during summer days, and when choosing sunglasses, people should get an expert opinion and opt for a quality one. They also emphasize the importance of staying out of sun between the hours of 11.00 – 16.00, and said that sunglass was the most frequently used helpful tool.
Hasan Durmuş, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health, Opticianry Program, reported that one of the most significant causes of cataract, other than genetic factors, was sunlight which had an effect on the eye until the age of 18. Durmuş pointed out that people should be conscious about protecting their eye health regardless of their age. He said, “We recommend people, who use prescription glasses or contact lenses, to use prescription sunglasses. Paying less money for poor quality products require to pay much more money to treat the damages caused by later on, thus effecting both individual and social economic structure. Fancy sunglasses may make you look good; however, protecting your eye health for brighter futures is much more important.”
‘Beauty or Health'
Durmuş indicated that sunglasses were treated as aesthetical accessories by a large majority, and due to the density of the sunlight, the pupils contracted and the amount of light in the eyes decreased. Durmuş said that no matter what color it is, the sunglass would lessen the amount of light, and make pupils enlarge.
‘Get Sunglasses for Your Face Shape’
Durmuş stated that in the event of the lenses used in sunglasses failing to protect the eyes from ultraviolet rays, irrevocable damages in sight occurred. He said the following:
“People want to buy sunglasses because of sports activities and driving pruposes. For such purposes, by taking the reflection factor into consideration, special lenses or polarized lenses should be chosen by athletes that would increase sight quality. Also, the poor material used in the frame of the sunglass may cause allergies. In addition to quality, people should pay attention to frame fitting their face shape. Frames that fit tightly on temples and cheeks may be bothersome. Lenses that do not fit the face shape, may reveal the prismatic effect and cause a shift in sight and negatively affect the quality of vision.”
