‘IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING A CAREER PATH’
As the students are occupied with possible career choices with Undergraduate Placement Exam (LYS) being over, the experts state that choosing the right career is one of the most significant decisions in a person’s life. Clinical Psychologist Merve Yavuz, IUE Psychological Development and Counseling Centre Coordinator, who pointed out that career choice was a major determinant in life style, stated that students needed to be informed about occupations and identify their skills realistically.
Yavuz indicated that occupation was a determining factor on the satisfaction of life. She said, “During high school period, students decide about the field and work life they will be engaged in the future. In order to choose a right career, one needs to be aware of skills and knowledge, and the extent they need to be able to perform that certain profession. They need to identify their expectations of that profession. They need to analyze current professions, and research about other options.”
‘Make a Detailed Research’
Yavuz, who asked students to make sure the requirements of a certain profession suited them or not, pointed out the importance of skills, interests, and values in choosing a career. Yavuz stated the following when making a career decision:
“Learning about professions is very crucial. Therefore, students need to take criteria such as job description, length of education, and major courses taken, required qualifications, life after graduation, work conditions, and salary into consideration. They need to be able to answer the questions whether the field they are interested in match their interest and skills, the pros and cons of that job, whether the job is in high demand or not, the average salary, how long people worked in that job for, whether the demand for that job will increase or decrease, etc.”
