GETTING REDAY FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW
Izmir University of Economics Faculty of Law is getting ready to offer 30% of courses in English in order to equip the future lawyers with knowledge of national and international law. IUE Faculty of Law will be teaching many courses such as “European Capital Market Law”, “Commercial Arbitration Law” and “European Competition Law” in English in 2015 – 2016 academic year.
Prof. Dr. Huriye Kubilay, IUE Dean of Faculty of Law, stated that students took “English for Law” course each semester throughout their undergraduate studies, and attained competence in accessing, comprehending, interpreting foreign legal resources. She said, “The course content includes preparation of petitions in English, comprehension of universal legal principles, and carrying them into effect. With English being used as the medium of instruction in other faculties of the University, students of Faculty of Law get an opportunity to take common courses. The Higher Education Board has approved the decision of medium of instruction being in 30% English at IUE Faculty of Law starting from 2015-2016 academic year. This way, our students, in addition to taking basic legal courses such as “Civil Law”, “Administrative Law”, “Law of Obligations”, “Commercial Law”, “Civil Procedure Law” in Turkish, will be able to take various courses such as “European Capital Market Law”, “Commercial Arbitration Law”, and “European Competition Law” in English from Turkish and foreign lecturers”.
‘Consultants for Foreign Firms from IUE’
Prof. Dr. Kubilay reminded that IUE Faculty of Law was a member of European Law Institute and European Law Faculties of Law. She said that there were 41 thousand 131 foreign capital firms doing business in our country, and again 2 thousand 89 foreign companies doing business in Izmir. Prof. Dr. Kubilay said, “Many foreign citizens live in our country. The need to resolve legal disputes of all people and organizations clearly presents the importance of Legal English Education. We train our students to be able to provide legal services in international courts and International Court of Arbitration and European Arbitration Court in future. As the Faculty of Law, we offer education in line with bringing legal solutions to world issues and issues of our country.”
