SPECIAL CARE FOR PETS
Pets need not worry anymore. Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Computer Engineering created a pet care station to meet the needs of pets as part of “Smart Pet Assistant Project” which is remotely controlled via mobile equipment. The software and hardware, developed initially for pet cats and dogs, will enable feeding on a regular basis.
Gürkan Akpınar, Cemre Mat, and Sait Fatih Karakaya, all students of IUE Department of Computer Engineering, took the daily needs of pets into consideration in the project guided by Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, IUE Vice Rector. Gürkan Akpınar stated that it was a mobile application based project and he said, “Our main purpose is to find a solution for pet owners when taking care of their pets, ease their job by providing them a healthier, more standardized care system”.
‘Faithful Friends Will Be Well Taken Care Of’
Akpınar reported that the user needed to enter information about the pet in the system. He stated the following:
“The software we developed pairs with the pet care station on the internet. When the users install the Smart Pet application on their phones, they will be able to check the amount of water or pet food left. The system sends a warning when water or food finishes. It also allows changing the amount of food or feeding intervals. The system, as well as working on instant commands, dispenses water or food automatically based on the information on the database, thus making the user feeling comfortable when away from home.”
‘Immediate Response’
Thanks to the heat sensors, when the temperatures drop below a critical level, pet’s pillow gets heated automatically. The system also makes an urgent call to the vet when the necessary info is entered into the system, said Akpınar and he said that the calendar on the application reminds the user of vaccination dates, medicine times, etc.
