SMART BUILDING FOR SMART EDUCATION
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), in which medium of instruction is English, started to serve its students at the new building of School of Foreign Languages equipped with smart classrooms. The building, designed by academicians of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, is equipped with interactive projectors, all-in-one PC’s, microphones, and smart boards.
Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, toured the building with IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, Asst. Prof. Dr. Evrim Üstünlüoğlu, Director of IUE School of Foreign Languages, project developers Gudjon Thor Erlendsson, Özlem Akın Tapçalap, and Michael Edward Young, Lecturers, IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Architect Hüsnü Alphan, Director of Projects and Construction, and Architect Mehtap Altuğ.
Ekrem Demirtaş stated that one thousand 112 students started receiving training in the new building and that they invested almost 100 million Turkish Lira to renew and improve the physical conditions on campus. President Demirtaş said, “9 thousand 646 m2 space usage is available. It is a very appealing and a different building. We’ve spent almost 40 million TL. It is designed by the lecturers at IUE Department of Architecture. With its unique design and style, it will surely receive an award.”
‘Digital Education Makes a Mark’
Demirtaş stated that smart class– smart campus project was in use now at the University, and students and their teachers met online at virtual office hours to discuss and get questions answered. Students had a chance to log in with their passwords and watch the courses over and over if they missed a class because they were sick at home. Demirtaş said that the students took a step into a personalized digital education with this system.
‘Cranked Our Education up A Notch’
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen stated that the University, since its establishment, offered education in English and produced graduates who were world citizens “Our students are taking part in global competition successfully. We are working on to crank our education up a notch. Prep classes started the new academic year in the new building equipped with smart technology with a brand new curriculum. Our students will be learning English that they will be using throughout their entire education and career lives as if they are learning it abroad,” said the Rector.
Facts about the new building…
Foreign language education was taken as basis as a design concept.
The building, which looks as two separate blocks, is combined interiorly.
Fiber-reinforced concrete is used for the exteriors.
White and gray for the exterior, colors of rainbow for the interior is used as paint.
The top floor open office area is designed to accommodate a contemporary working space.
Different types of seating are used in common areas to allow communication between students and academicians and between each other.
