DEVELOP YOUR OWN STUDY SKILLS
The experts remind that each student has a unique capacity to understand a course and they need to develop their own personal approach to study and learning in a way that meets their own individual needs. Students most of the time simply give up by saying that they don’t understand, says Songül Özgün, Lecturer at Child Development Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics. She says that each individual learns in a different way, and needs to keep anything that prevents them from studying under control.
Özgün says that the student needs to list down anything that prevents them from studying to begin with, and even when all conditions are met for a student to study, there are differences in learning and perception for each individual. Özgün made the following recommendations:
“Do you have problem studying, dislike the subject, or lack information to understand it? You can increase these questions. If you are having difficulty to make the decision to study, just sit at the table for a while (may be couple of days); this will help you prepare to study. Another method to ease your efficient studying is to get materials such as pencils, books, etc. ready before starting to study. This will save you time and help you pay attention to the subject more since you will not be interrupted to get up all the time.”
‘Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses’
Özgün says that since there are individual differences when it comes to learning, the study zone needs to be unique as well. She says students need to establish a study zone. “Get rid of all distractions. Some people like quiet places; others will need a little bit of background noise like music. Using the best study lighting is also important for everyone when studying.”
‘Make a Study Schedule’
Özgün states that weekly or monthly schedules would work best for studying, however, one should make sure not to add too much content. Also, doing tests and reading about the subjects would reinforce the learning, says Özgün.
