101 DESIGNS BY IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
Students of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) made a fashion feast. The young designers- sophomore, junior, and senior students of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design- displayed 101 designs including costumes inspired by Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Recurring Time’ themed experimental outfits, “Iconic Styles of Music Stars”, and ‘Pearl of the Aegean’ themed ready to wear collection at Agora Shopping Mall.
2015 Fall Semester Fashion Show, prepared by 48 students, was attended by Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, IUE Acting Rector, fashion designers and guests. Prof. Dr. Ender Yazgan Bulgun, Dean of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, stated that each grade worked on a different theme. She said, “Senior students worked on experimental couture designs as part of the design studio course led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Vuruşkan and Lecturer Jörn Fröhlich. The seniors created ‘recurring time’ themed designs for Fall Semester Fashion Show. 59 designs were created by 14 students.”
‘Alice Came to Life’
Prof. Dr. Bulgun said that sophomore, junior, and senior students got inspired by Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ as part of the Costume Design Elective Course. She said that the young designers created costumes for both Alice and another character they chose. Prof. Dr. Bulgun stated the following:
“Design and production process of 16 costumes created by 8 students were led by Jörn Fröhlich. The 3rd graders focused on male clothing. Each designer chose a famous male artist like Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, and created custom designs. The 2nd graders created, “Pearl of the Aegean” themed ready to wear collection. The collection, led by lecturers Özge Dikkaya Göknur, Seda Kuleli, and Angela Burns, included 26 designs (one design per student).”
‘Organization and Models by Izmir Economics’
Prof. Dr. Bulgun reported that the fashion show itself was also organized by students who took the ‘Fashion Show Organization and Choreography” course by Başak Gürsoy, former model who founded the first modeling agency in Turkey. She said that the elective course welcomed students from a wide variety of disciplines. Students from Department of Culinary Arts and Management, Department of Business in addition to Department of Fashion and Textile Design would be organizing the fashion show. Also, the entire fashion models on the runway would be the students of Izmir University of Economics, said Prof. Dr. Bulgun.
