HELPING HAND FOR URFA
IUE students are giving hope to the little ones in Urfa Haliliye Terzi Elementary and Middle School. IUE students got in touch with the teacher Büşra Arslan and collected 80 boxes worth of coats, jackets, boots, winter wear, etc. and shipped them off.
Thanks to the campaign started by Serhat Mirkan Acar, Cumhur Ege Omaç, Ezgi Yaparsoy, and Bora Akar, members of Izmir University of Economics Göztepe Sports Fan Club, 480 students will not get affected by the harsh winter conditions. Serhat Mirkan Acar, who talked about their aid campaign, stated that Büşra teacher informed them about students’ needs. Acar said, “We wanted to do the best we could for young students there who are experiencing financial difficulties. We set up a booth for one month and shared our campaign on social media. Our campaign slogan was ‘Urfa Sana Küsmesin (Don’t Let Urfa Resent You)’, ‘Sen de bunun bir parçası ol (Be a Part of This). Bir yüzü de sen güldür (Put a Smile on Someone’s Face)’. We collected as many winter wear as the number of students at school.”
‘480 coats from Istanbul’
Acar stated that a business from Istanbul contributed to their aid campaign by donating 480 coats, and that they were very happy about the fact that their campaign attracted so much attention so that they would be able to help future university students. Acar also said that all the shipping expenses to Urfa were paid by Mehmet Sepil, Chairman of Göztepe Sports Club. “When we heard about their needs, we did not feel comfortable. But since we are also students we could only do so much. We hope that they will have better days, not needing for any help. We also hope that people find this social inequality odd, and do what is necessary,” said Acar.
