FUTURE VERSION OF GUZELBAHCE BY YOUNG ARCHITECTS
Students of Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) are designing the future of Güzelbahçe. The students also renewed the old Türk Ticaret Bankası (Turkish Trade Bank) located on Mimar Kemalettin Street and transformed it into a modern library in 2020.
Students’ designs were displayed at Faculty of Fine Arts and Design. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE board of Trustees, Yaşar Üremiş, Acting Mayor of Güzelbahçe, Soner Tanrıkulu and Aras Kaynarca, Council Members of Güzelbahçe Municipality, Prof. Dr. Ender Yazgan Bulgun, Dean of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar Durmaz, Head of IUE Department of Architecture, academicians, and students attended the exhibition. President Demirtaş and Üremiş viewed the exhibition and got information about the projects from the students.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Durmaz explained that 80 students, in two groups, addressed Güzelbahçe and Turkish Trade Bank as part of the Architecture Project Course. Durmaz said that a group of students transformed the building of Turkish Trade Bank into a modern library in 2020 with their Lecturer Michael Edward Young. And the second group she coordinated worked on Güzelbahçe Project. Durmaz said, “Students came up with various projects for the space between the highway and the seashore. They determined what Güzelbahçe needs in the future. They came up with solutions for the county as well as showing their dream version of Güzelbahçe. Their projects included wide variety of designs from Sculpture Park to art atelier, health centers to olive oil factory. Both the urban issues and architectural solutions were considered and scenarios were built about the future of Güzelbahçe.”
