TRAINING COURSES TO MAKE MATH MORE INTERESTING
Mathematics teachers will discover ways to make “math” class more interesting for students. Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Continuous Education Center (IUECEC) will offer Vedic, Montessori, Singapore Math Trainer Training courses for math, physics, and chemistry teachers and prospective teachers. Trainings, co-organized by “Thales Mathematics Museum” and coordinated by IUE Continuous Education Center, will lecture the educators on how to teach math the fun way via tools, games, etc.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nesrin Oruç Ertürk, Director of IUECEC, said “Teachers, who will be awarded certificates at the end of the courses, will be taking an important step in the future lives of the children positively by engaging students in mathematical activities early on. This will be a huge step for new generations. We decided to offer these trainings so we can have students who adores math and enjoy learning math.”
Ertürk reported that students viewed math as an abstract concept, but Vedic, Montessori, Singapore Mathematics models made math more concrete and enjoyable. She said that math education was very significant in terms of training more productive and talented, free-thinker students.
Ertürk, who said that they would try to reduce prejudices as math being ‘difficult’ in their training courses, said that they would be introducing the education systems being used in other countries as well. She stated the following:
“Training courses will take place at the University. 32 hour training courses will focus on three main education models. These education models will emphasize basic operations. Mathematical concepts and mechanisms will be taught. How math teaching takes place via using simple tools, and how math should not be a subject to be scared of will be discussed.”
