A WELL DESERVED SUCCESS
IUE Fashion Designers worked a miracle by achieving first, second, and third place at the 7th Bridal Design Competition organized as part of 10th If Wedding Fashion Show- Wedding Dresses, Suits, and Evening Gowns Fair. Tuğçe Görgülü, junior at IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design, came in first place, İpek Aygül, graduate of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, came in second, and Gülden Yaman, senior also from the same department, came in third place among 507 contestants. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, congratulated the winners, who made it to the top 15 finalists, at the exhibition hall and said that Turkey trained youth who was capable of creating their own fashion, brand, and designs. The winner of the competition Görgülü received a job offer from Abdullah Salkım, CEO of Bianco Vita.
President Demirtaş reported that the first department of fashion design in Turkey was established at Izmir University of Economics, the same year the University was established. He said, “Because we said that Turkey would not make any progress via contract manufacturing. We said that we had to create our own fashion style, brands, and designs and said that we were going to train youth who would make that possible. 15 years have passed. We had many students who achieved first place in numerous competitions but a miracle happened this time. Our students received first, second, and third place in the same competition”.
‘Objective Assessment Brought Record Winners’
President Demirtaş stated that the jury gave points without realizing the top three contestants were from the same university, so the students received their awards based on a very realistic and fair assessment. “We want to create our own brand and expand overseas. Izmir is currently undertaking 70% of bridal export in Turkey. This is major. Of course we need to increase its scale and capacity,” said Demirtaş.
‘Overtime at the Workshop’
Prof. Dr. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, said, “Our students worked very hard. They worked 24/7 even on their semester break. So, this is a very well deserved success.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Vuruşkan, Vice Dean of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, stated that students from different generations received award at the competition, and the fact that 5 IUE fashion designers were among the 15 finalists was a very remarkable achievement.
