DECIDED ABOUT THEIR CAREERS
Senior high school students, who are up against a tough exam marathon, learn about their future careers on-site. Students asked about education required, and career opportunities about the professions they are interested in at the “Career Event for High School Students” that took place at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Conference Hall. As they enjoyed being ‘a university student’ for a full day, students also received counseling on how to overcome exam anxiety.
Songül Özgün, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Services, stated that students would be able to take control of situations that prevent them from studying prior to the tough exams. Özgün asked students to write down anything that keep them from studying. She said, “Do you have problem studying, dislike the subject, or lack information to understand it? You can increase these questions. If you are having difficulty to make the decision to study, just sit at the table for a while (may be couple of days); this will help you prepare to study”. She also said that getting materials such as pencils, books, and etc. ready before starting to study would save time and help pay attention to the subject more.
‘Personal Study Zone’
Özgün said that students needed to make a good observation about them and need to establish a study zone unique to them. “Get rid of all distractions. Some people like quiet places; others will need a little bit of background noise like music. Using the best study lighting is also important for everyone when studying,” recommended Özgün.
