TRUST ‘YOURSELF’ BEFORE YGS
The experts recommend 2 million 178 thousand 563 students, who are going to take Transition to Higher Education Examination (YGS) this weekend, to leave aside negative thoughts and focus on their future. The experts, who gave “golden” advice to prospective university students before the exam on March 13, said that it was very normal for students to get excited but they wanted the students to repeat the phrase, “I can do this, I want to do this, I will do all that I can at the exam”.
Clinical Psychologist Merve Yavuz, IUE Psychological Development and Counseling Centre Coordinator, stated that the students trusting their knowledge would bring in success for them. Yavuz said, “The important thing is that you will get over this exam and the life will go on. If you have concerns you should definitely share these with your parents or the school counselor. And when doing so, get rid of all negative thoughts and focus on a more positive picture, in other words, your future. Positive thinking has a positive outcome. Negative thinking on the other hand makes you worry more. This in return, makes you become more aware of your pulse, makes your palms sweat, or cause mind blur.”
Yavuz asked to students to stop studying in worry and focus on inspiring thoughts. She said that visiting the place of exam beforehand and spending a little time there would be helpful. Yavuz made the following recommendations:
“Go the exam place and stay there a little while. Close your eyes and think about the exam. Paint this picture in your head in a calm manner. Get rid of all the bad scenarios, and focus on scenarios that will increase your self-confidence, success, and positive outcome. Stay away from heavy activities that will tire your brain and body.”
Yavuz indicated that students should turn their exam anxiety into an opportunity by saying to themselves ‘I am in the exam now and I will make the most of this, this is a big chance for me.” Yavuz said, “If you get distracted in the exam, close your eyes and relax. Remind yourself that you are in charge. Read the questions carefully and continue.”
