IUE STUDENTS MAKE SICK CHILDREN HAPPY
They bake pastries and muffins and collect donations to make sick children happy. Students of Department of Culinary Arts and Management, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) strive to make children, who are hospitalized at Children’s Oncology Ward at Dokuz Eylül University Hospital, happy for the past 3 years. The students Ezgi Usluer, Fulya Sivritaş, Selin Akay, and Merve Öztürk volunteer to make the sick children forget all the pain and hardship they experience during their treatments.
Ezgi Usluer, a junior at IUE Department of Culinary Arts and Management, stated that they purchased all the ingredients to bake pastries, muffins on a budget they made. She said, “The earnings from the sales are used for different activities for children hospitalized at Children’s Oncology Ward. With last year’s budget, we purchased a few tablets for children in order to help them forget what they are going through, to entertain them a tiny bit. And the rest of the budget was used for various activities.”
‘More to Come’
Always looking to do something different, Usluer said that this year they organized a breakfast for sick children and their parents. She said that there was a kitchen and a play area at the hospital and they baked cookies with the children there. Usluer said, “When we run out of budget we sell homemade goodies once a year, and use that money for various activities throughout the year. We bake with them to get their attention away from the problems and make them focus on different and nicer things. This makes us very happy. We are doing this for the past 3 years and we will continue doing this.”
