IZMIR ECONOMICS: PLACE FOR YACHT INTERIOR DESIGN
Students of Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), designed a 21 meter sailboat as part of interior architecture studio course. Students, who made a custom design, submitted their projects to the jury. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, who attended the jury meeting, listened to the presentations of students and graded full scores.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Ergül, Lecturer at Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, reported that junior students re-design the interiors of a boat as part of their course every year. Ergül said, “Our students created a design for a 21 meter sail boat in this project. The future interior architects addressed the boat in the context of human and space communication. They studied the characteristics of yacht interior design onsite and created a very comfortable interior design.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ergül, who said that students engaged in a re-design process they named as ‘refit’, where they studied the life style and expectations of the users, stated the following:
“The students got an opportunity to meet with a real life user this time; they toured the boat and interviewed the user. Later on, they worked on the design of the lower deck of the boat. They especially focused on the design, color, texture, and materials of the spaces under the bow in order to make the most of the space. They used natural materials, designed clear and neat surfaces, focused on soft and light colors to create a spacious perception in closed spaces.” Ergül said that 43 students in groups of two studied together and brought an interior architecture approach to spatial concepts on sea.
