Wedding gowns are getting sparkly. Lecturers of Izmir University of Economics- Faculty of Fine Arts and Design and Faculty of Engineering and Computer Sciences created laser cut, LED lighted wedding gown. The gown will be presented for the first in Izmir at Futurotextiles exhibition held by French Cultural Center.
The “Yenilenen Romantizm (Romanticism Renewed)” titled wedding gown was inspired by Celsus Library in Ephesus. Prof. Dr. Ender Yazgan Bulgun, Dean of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Vuruşkan, Vice Dean, Elif Tekcan, Research Assistant of Department of Fashion Design and Textile, and senior student Dilara Karaca took part in the project. Emre İçöz, Aykut Gemici, and Büşra Ümran Akarçay, students of Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering carried out the implementation of the LED lighting of the gown under the guidance of Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Vuruşkan gave information about the project saying they wanted to create a unique, technology-focused design. She said, “The overall shape and laser cut patterns were inspired by the Celsus Library in Ephesus. LED lighting elements were placed into the inner parts of the gown in order to accentuate the laser cut patterns and the three dimensional details around the body. We tried to break the routine in bridal industry. We tried to bring a new alternative to bridal design approaches with the help of technology.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Vuruşkan stated that the exhibition, which is going to be opened in Izmir on May 26 at History and Art Museum, was also supported by Nord-Pas de Calais Region and Lille Metropolitan Municipality in France, and opened in many other countries. Vuruşkan pointed that the exhibition brought science, technology, design, and art together with innovative textiles.
