Family history, smoking, high blood pressure, high levels of blood lipids, and being overweight is to blame for making our heart sick at around 80%, our vital organ which works nonstop to pump blood containing oxygen. World Heart Day on 29 September is the World Heart Federation's biggest platform for raising awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD). The experts call attention to preventative measures and say “Take care of your heart”.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Ersil Soysal, Lecturer, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Faculty of Medicine, stated that the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases over total population was 12.7% based on the data by Ministry of Health. She said, “According to Turkish Statistics Institute data, 40% of death cases were caused by diseases of the circulatory system in 2014. The heart needs to do its job properly for a healthy living. Switching to an active life, biking or walking at least 30 minutes a day, using stairs instead of elevator, getting rid of excess weight, and quitting smoking is very important to promote a healthy heart. It is a known fact that 150 minutes of medium intensity physical activity weekly lowers the risk of ischemic heart disease at 30%, and risk of diabetes at 27% in adults”.
‘It is possible to prevent’
Cardiovascular diseases affected people’s lives psychologically and socially as well, sated Soysal and she said that by taking precautions into consideration, it was possible to prevent cardiovascular diseases up to 80%.
