DESIGN MEETS DISABILITY
Tuğçe Çelimli, student at Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics, designed a crib for wheelchair-bound mothers so they can easily take care of their babies. Çelimli’s design came in first place in the category of Home Furniture for the Disabled at the “12th National Home Furniture Design Competition” organized by the Association of Turkish Furniture Manufacturers (MOSDER).
Her design, “Circle”, allows wheelchair-bound mothers to tend to their babies needs more comfortably and have access to stuff easily. A prototype crib, manufactured by Casa Furniture, allows mothers to have access to all the materials she needs within an arm’s reach.
Çelimli stated that functionality in addition to looks comes into prominence in furniture and she said, “There aren’t many furniture designs for disabled individuals. I wanted disabled mothers to take care of their babies more quickly and easily. The height of my design is at the seating level of the wheelchair. It has revolving shelves. So, mothers can easily reach to their babies as well as materials she needs. Both the crib bars and the crib revolve. The shelves on either side of the crib also revolve. Functions of this furniture were specifically designed for disabled mothers.”
