THE ARCHITECTURE OF BASMANE IN INTERNATIONAL ARENA
The transformation of Basmane has been a course topic. Graduate students of Architecture Program of Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Izmir University of Economics, studied the physical and historical texture of Basmane, a district home for the refugees.
Information gathered at the research trip, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Aslı Ceylan Öner, IUE Head of Department of Architecture, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar Durmaz, will be presented at the annual meeting of Association of American Geographers (AAG) in April, 2017 in Boston, USA.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Aslı Ceylan Öner gave information about the trip and she said that Basmane hosted Syrian refugees and it harbored many number of historical buildings. Öner said, “In our first part of the project, we studied the common areas used by both Syrian refugees and Izmir locals. We analyzed the places and functions used by the refugees the most. The district has a rich structure. However, it appears as a privileged area before us with its neglected architecture and urban environment texture”.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Öner reported that they took the trip with the graduate students of “Izmir and Urbanization” course, accompanied by Orhan Beşikçi, city observer-writer, Mehmet Gülümser, tourist guide, and Kemal Ustaoğlu, native of Basmane, and she said that they would be sharing the information regarding the importance of the district with foreign researchers.
