The virtual world gained 24 new games under the theme of ‘Waves’ at digital game sector’s most important game development organization Global Game Jam’s (GGJ) Izmir leg. 110 participants spent 48 hours of little or no sleep at the event organized by Izmir University of Economics where software developers, designers, and members of computer world came together.
The event, organized by IUE Game Development Team led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Gazihan Alankuş, Lecturer at IUE Faculty of Engineering and Head of Event Committee for Aegean 2017 Global Game Jam, took place concurrently worldwide.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Gazihan Alankuş reported that participants divided into teams, and fought against insomnia in order to develop computer games in 48 hours. He said that experts of the sector guided the participants and shared their experiences with them. “Students, academicians, amateurs and professionals participating in the event slept very little in 48 hours and developed new generation computer games under the theme of ‘Waves’. This year had been the 6th game jam event where representatives of the sector had a chance to meet young talents. There was plenty of support and help around. We are the only university in Turkey offering computer games education in undergraduate level. The event is also important for our students of Computer Options Games to come together with people from different backgrounds and create new games,” Alankuş said.
‘From crawling to running’
Game sector in our country is in its infancy stage, and such organizations contribute greatly, said Asst. Prof. Dr. Alankuş and he stated, “6 thousand 866 computer games were developed throughout the event last year. It is very significant in terms of game sector in our country that is still in its infancy stage. This year 24 new games are developed”.
