TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION IS A MUST
Technological developments cause security measures to increase when it comes to using credit cards. The credit cards sent by banks will no longer be authorized for online shopping based on the decision by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK). New customers, upon receiving their cards, will have to call the customer services and give their approval for online use of their cards. Also, existing customers with credit cards will have to contact their banks by August 17 and inform them about their decision regarding online transactions. Prof. Dr. Hakan Yetkiner, Lecturer, Department of Economics, Izmir University of Economics, who commented on the BDDK decision, said that the measures were very timely; however, there was an urgent need for technology education in Turkey.
Prof. Dr. Yetkiner, who analyzed TUIK’s data, stated that 60% of the shopping included clothing items and sports materials, 29.7% transport tickets, renting a car, 25.8% household goods, 21% electronic tools such as mobile phones, and 19.8% was used for buying food. Prof. Dr. Yetkiner reported that there were approximately 176 million debit cards and credit cards in Turkey. “Technology is taking control of our lives more and more every day. Computers first, then internet, and now smart phones are technologies we can’t get separated from. Leaving efficient use of technologies aside, there are significant security problems in individual and public use of technologies. As a result of this, there is an incremental growth of series of problems including breach of privacy, and failing to protect commercial trades. Decision and measures taken by BDDK are very timely, however, they need to be backed up by technology education, otherwise, they will be invalid with the next technological development if people are not educated about it,” said Prof. Dr. Yetkiner.
