‘UNBURDENED EMOTIONS’
Students with special education needs proved that emotions are not hindered by disabilities. Students with autism and Down syndrome, receiving education at Ege Artı Special Education and Rehabilitation Center, who were invited by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School of Health Services, Child Development Program, reflected their emotions such as happiness, sorrow, love, frustration, etc. to photographs. IUE Photography Studio hosted students whom modeled different emotions. Photographs of students will be displayed at an exhibition.
Songül Özgün, Lecturer, IUE Vocational School of Health Services, Child Development Program, reported that students enjoyed being part of the photo shoot. Özgün said, “Our guests have shown that emotions don’t have colors, or hindrances. Each individual is unique with their emotions, thoughts, and dreams. Best way to reflect thoughts is to convey emotions with expressions. These students proved to us that emotions can be reflected successfully regardless of differences. They posed beautifully and open-heartedly at the photography studio. Their photos will be exhibited very soon”.
Dilek Selenay Arpacı, student at IUE Vocational School of Health Services, Child Development Program, stated that she wanted to show that students with special education needs, just like any other individual, were capable of reflecting their emotions in her project titled, “Duyguları Engelsiz”. Arpacı said, “I wanted to show that they, too, have emotions such as thoughts, ideas, decisions, excitements, joys, sorrows, and many more just like we all do. My objective was to create awareness about people with special education needs. I believe that this project will help people understand that individuals with special needs are also capable of loving, thinking, getting hurt, feeling, and living their life without other people pitying on them.”
