HOW TO RELIEVE ANXIETY IN LYS
The experts made recommendations to candidates who are worried about open-ended questions that will be asked for the first time in Undergraduate Placement Exams (LYS), a testing system thousands of students compete for university education every year.
Songül Özgün, Lecturer at Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics, stated that the new system was a cause for anxiety for students, and added that beginning the test with open-ended questions would help candidates avoid stressful thoughts such as “I forgot everything I know, I cannot remember anything, etc.”
Özgün reported that a new approach was going to be applied this year in LYS. “In addition to multiple choice questions, this year Student Selection and Placement Center decided to ask open-ended questions that can be answered with one word, or a simple sentence or a number or two. This new application causes anxiety in already stressed out students. The fact that there will be three open-ended questions in each test to get the students adjust to this new method will help lower their anxiety. However, it is not wise to ignore them just because there will be few number of such questions,” said Özgün.
‘No hurries, no worries’
Özgün indicated that each individual had a unique learning style, and studying by writing, highlighting important points by using colored markers and papers would improve memory. Özgün also pointed out that students should not hurry during the exam, and she said, “Students should take their time, focus, and read each question carefully. Trying to answer questions in a hurry would only cause making mistakes”.
