CHILDREN'S LITERATURE IN TRANSLATION
Department of Translation and Interpretation, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) hosted a panel titled, “An Ecocritical Approach to Children's Literature and Translations”. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Necdet Neydim, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Özdemir, Asst. Prof. Dr. Banu Akçeşme, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Önder Çetin delivered presentations on children’s literature, ecological literacy training for children, ecocriticism in Turkey and worldwide, and representation of environment in English text books in the first session of the panel.
In the second session, Perçem U. Gönül, Editor for Top Publishing House, children’s literature authors; Fidan Çobanoğlu Kaplan, Eşref Karadağ, and Asuman Nesibe Gök, Director of Bornova District Public Library, held a roundtable discussion titled, “children, literature, environment” moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Necdet Neydim.
During the panel, the outcomes of “environmentalism in children’s literature, ecocultural conveyance” based Project-1001 (115K145), coordinated by Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner from IUE Department of Translation and Interpretation, that is going to end in September 2017, were also presented. The outcomes of the project were presented by Prof. Dr. Yetkiner and project workers Asst. Prof. Dr. Derya Duman and Prof. Dr. Yasemin Yavuz.
The study revealed there was loss of both knowledge and attitude transfer in translation of English texts into Turkish. Additionally, the study also revealed that, there was nativization of translation of dominant factors during 1929-2013.
Prof. Dr. Yetkiner stated that they held the panel in order to share the outcomes of Tübitak supported project-1001 and she said, “A project on environmental awareness and environmental education in children’s literature has major social and pedagogical effect. We’ve realized this in this very panel that we held with the participation of trainers, authors, publishing houses, and students”.
