ARCHITECTS THAT STEER FLOATING LIFE
IUE architects gave a new direction to architecture through the theme “flow”. Senior projects of students of Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design; Izmir University of Economics (IUE) equipped Basmane and Karaçam Village, Bornova with social living environment. They also came up with new designs on the effects multi story buildings on urban life.
Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Can Muğan, IUE Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, Prof. Dr. Ender Yazgan Bulgun, Dean of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, visited the designs of the students at the exhibition area.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Aslı Ceylan Öner, Head of IUE Department of Architecture, stated that students based their projects on the theme “flow” and she said, “Our students developed their projects under 3 different groups based on spatial policies, solidarity, and ecovillage sub-themes. They expressed the bonds the multi-story buildings established with environment and society by means of architectural language. 18 students designed multi story buildings by taking the environmental, democratic, aesthetic, and social concerns into consideration under the guidance of Group Coordinator Michael Edward Young, Lecturer Nazlı Kök and Research Assistant Ece Küreli.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Öner reported that Group Coordinator Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar Durmaz Drinkwater, Lecturer Bilge Göktoğan and 22 students redesigned Basmane. “Basmane became the living quarters of the refugees. Our students designed an international children’s house, children’s playgrounds, and solidarity center for women, food & beverage places and art centers in the region. They were invited to Basmane Days to exhibit their projects,” said Öner.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Öner also reported that 26 students under the guidance of Group Coordinator Işık Ülkün Neusser and Lecturers Ayşe Aydoğan and Metin Şahin, studied Karaçam Village, Bornova as part of “Ecovillage” theme. Asst. Prof. Dr. Öner stated that the students focused their projects on areas for children, sports, and art and their designs created an alternative for over urbanization. Asst. Prof. Dr. Öner said that their projects were invited by Bornova Municipality to be exhibited and to be published in Bornova İçin Fikirler (Ideas for Bornova) catalogue.
