AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT GRADUATE EDUCATION
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) held “Graduate Student Advising” titled workshop. The workshop, co-organized by IUE Graduate Schools of Social Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences, Business, and Health Sciences, focused on graduate student-advisor communication. IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Can Şımga Muğan, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, 71 academicians from graduate schools and faculties, and graduate school students attended the workshop.
Prof. Dr. Gül Güner Akdoğan, Director of Graduate School of Health Sciences and Lecturer at Faculty of Medicine, who delivered an opening speech, said that the purpose of graduate education was to train the future researchers. The Professor said, “It is also to train academicians with strong accumulation of knowledge, contribute to intellectual and scientific development of science, and to conduct researches. Raising well-equipped individuals is our main goal”.
Prof. Dr. Akdoğan reported that the beginning of advising process was the time when most information about the students would be gathered, and that it would be very useful to share information with students about graduate education. Prof. Dr. Akdoğan said, “We need to be realistic. Each student, advisor, thesis, and management structure comes with constraints. Students should be provided time, they should be trusted; they should be listened to, and motivated. Students should be provided feedback throughout graduate education process. They should be offered help to finish their projects, and offered good role modeling”.
Following the opening remarks, the workshop groups continued with their studies.
