EYE HEALTH AND QUALITY OF SUNGLASSES
Sunglasses help protect the eyes. While they are just an accessory for some, sunglasses protect the retina from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Experts, who recommend people not to stay under the sun for a long time especially in summer, underline that people should choose high quality sunglasses and consult an expert before purchasing a pair of them.
By stating that low-quality products cause permanent damage, Hasan Durmuş, Lecturer at the Department of Opticianry, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics(IUE) says “While we pay less for second class products, we pay more to recover from the damage they cause, which has personal and social economic effects. Good-looking sunglasses may make people around you happy; however, it is more important to protect your eye health on sunny days to come.
“Health must be a priority”
Durmuş said that sunglasses are generally preferred as an accessory; however, their actual purpose is to protect your eyes from the harmful effect of the sun. Stating that sunglasses reduce the level of light, Durmuş reported “Pupils, the black part at the center of the eye, constrict when exposed to light and dilate in dark. When people are exposed to sunlight, their pupils shrink and block the light. Sunglasses, on the other hand, create a fake darkness. As the lens protects the eye from UV rays, it also protects your eye health. One should not prefer sunglasses with no UV-filter.”
Durmuş emphasized that sunglasses can be allergy-triggers, unless the materials used in glass frames are of high quality, and match the person, and added that glasses should not put pressure on temples and cheeks.
