CHILDREN, THE WINNER OF RECYCLING!
Scrap paper, waste fabrics, wood scraps have all been recycled, and the income from the sales of these products made the school of elementary students more beautiful. The Social Responsibility Project Group, consisting of faculty members and students of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics, redesigned the training room at Izmir – Menderes Sancaklı Ahmetçik Elementary School. Students, with their brand new training room, started the new academic year excitedly.
‘From zone cleaning to art’
Dr. Didem Kan-Kılıç, Lecturer, IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, reported that faculty members and students did a zone cleaning last February and made notebooks, necklaces, pencil holders, lambs, dolls, bags out of waste materials they obtained from ‘zone’ cleaning. Kılıç said, “We believe that the success of social responsibility projects needs to conform to the real needs of the society. With that in mind, we did a zone cleaning within the faculty building. We started out collecting waste materials from the project left overs and designed new products with recyclable materials. Our designs were exhibited at the “Higher Consciousness – Acquisition” titled exhibition under the name of ‘Collective Movement’ at Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center. After the exhibition, we held a sales event. The funds from that event was used to design a training room for the 15-classroom elementary school at Sancaklı Village in Menderes.”
‘Presenting their energy and skills to the society’
Kılıç stated that Faculty Members İpek Kaştaş Uzun, Selin Gülden, and students Anıl Nayır, Gözay Tepekesici, Fatih Kurt, and Ömer Akkaş participated in the project group and that they were very happy to have focused their energy and skills on social designs.
