EXCITING EMERGENCY SIMULATIONS OF PARAMEDIC STUDENTS
IUE “paramedics” learn about saving patients, responding to emergencies, and transporting to hospitals on the field. Students of Paramedic Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), who take part in real life rescue scenarios, participated in a training drill where they had to rescue an injured person at a mountain. Students responded to the scene of the accident, and moved the patient to a safer place.
Nursun Üstünkarlı, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Services, stated that the paramedics respond to patients or injured people on scene professionally, and timely and appropriate response increased the survival rates before transport to the hospital. Üstünkarlı said that they taught the course together with Melahat Kızıl, also Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Services, and reported that the students, in addition to theoretical education, participated in real life rescue scenarios where they learned how to respond to patients correctly.
Üstünkarlı pointed out that first aid was the first step to decrease serious injuries and increase rates of survival. She said, “Paramedics come to rescue people at the most critical times. We, on the other hand, make sure they reinforce what they learn with training drills. People living in mountainous regions or involved in mountaineering activities usually call 112 when they need help. The main concepts in education of students, who would be serving at 112 ambulances, are saving a patient, responding to them, and ensuring their transport to the hospital. We try to reinforce their education by getting them involved in real life rescue scenarios such as drowning where they save a patient from sea, lake, etc. and other accident scenes like a mountain area where they carry the patient to a safer place.”
