FROM DESIGN TO PRODUCTION
Students of Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, and Industrial Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), reinterpreted furniture designs of Italian Designer Enzo Mari. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, viewed the furniture being used at various locations on campus.
Sixty students from IUE Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, and Industrial Design, designed furniture by using wooden beams and nails at the Furniture Design Course, guided by Lecturer Stefano Pugliese, and supported by research assistants Hande Atmaca, Çağdaş Can Türk, Esra Bici, and Workshop Supervisor Argun Tanriverdi.
Stefoano Pugliese, Lecturer, IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, stated that students got involved in Italian Designer Enzo Mari’s ‘Autoprogettazione’s titled project, a manual enabling everyone to make furniture. “Students learn about furniture production processes at Furniture Design course. They learn from scratch. Students worked on Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione project in the first part of the fall semester. His manual offered designs using timber and nails. So, based on that manual, we brought a new perspective to furniture,” said Pugliese.
‘Workmanship by students’
Students did all the work themselves at the D Maker Lab, indicated Pugliese. Students made chairs, tables, and closets, reported Pugliese and said that the designs would be used at different locations across the campus.
