BOOKS; MAGICAL DOORWAYS TO OTHER WORLDS
Books opened the doors to new worlds for preschool students. Students of Child Development Program of Vocational School of Health Sciences, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) have donated books to the students of Kemalpaşa 75. Yıl Pre School as part of their “Children’s Literature and Media” course. IUE students attended classes with preschoolers, read books to them, and acted out the stories in the books.
Betül Özkul Cura, Lecturer at Child Development Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), stated that books played a major role in development of preschool aged children. She said, “Books contribute to the development of vocabulary of children. They also contribute to the development of imagination, empathy and values of children. Children exposed to books at an earlier age learn about concepts better. Their learning process based on a different environment, situation, and time begins”.
Cura also stated that children who develop a habit of reading at an early age continue this habit throughout their lives. She said that the preschoolers listened to the books read by IUE students very attentively. “Story books, by displaying lives from different perspectives during processes of understanding the world, is an indivisible part of child development. We wanted to support their upbringing as a healthy and conscious generation,” said Cura.
