30 NEW COMPUTER GAMES IN 48 SLEEPLESS HOURS
The virtual world gained 30 new games under the theme of ‘Transmission’ at digital game sector’s most important game development organization Global Game Jam’s (GGJ) Izmir leg. Two hundred participants spent 48 hours with little or no sleep at the event organized by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) where software developers, designers, and members of computer world came together.
The event, organized by IUE Game Development Team led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Gazihan Alankuş, Head of IUE Department of Mechatronics Engineering and Head of Event Committee for 2018 GGJ Aegean, took place concurrently worldwide. Asst. Prof. Dr. Gazihan Alankuş reported that participants divided into teams, and fought against time and insomnia in order to develop computer games in 48 hours. He said that expert software developers provided support to, and shared their experiences with the participants.
“Students, academicians, amateurs, and professionals participating in the event slept very little in 48 hours and developed new generation computer games under the theme of ‘Transmission’. This year had been the seventh game jam event where representatives of the sector had a chance to meet young talents. There was plenty of support and help around. International Game Developers Association (IGDA) initiated the Global Game Jam in 2009, and Izmir University of Economics has been hosting GGJ Aegean since 2012. More than 36 thousand participants in 700 centers in 95 countries participated last year. The event is also important for our students of Computer Games Option program to come together with people from different backgrounds, and create new games,” Alankuş said.
